Extra-Organisational Systems: A Challenge to the Software Engineering Paradigm

چکیده

Vulnerability is discussed in the context of data processing and information management applications. It is argued that a new class of information technology applications must now be recognised, in which one or more organisations cooperate with small enterprises and private individuals. The term 'extra-organisational systems' is coined for such applications. Using illustrations arising from studies in the field of consumer EFTS, it is shown that the public is generally regarded as 'usees', beyond the system and affected by it, rather than as part of the system. It is argued that conventional systems life-cycle notions and techniques are inappropriate to extra-organisational systems. Rather than the software engineering, artefact-oriented philosophy inherent in existing techniques, such systems demand an alternative organically-based paradigm.

Introduction from Session Chair: Component Models for Dependable Systems

Component-based Software Engineering (CBSE) is a maturing paradigm for conquering the complexity currently faced in software development. In the development of component-models, most attention has been paid to achieving interoperability at a technical level. However, many application domains require that systems meet extra-functional requirements, such as timeliness, safety, low-resource use, r...

An integrated decision support environment for organisational decision making

Traditional decision support systems are based on the paradigm of a single decision maker working at a stand-alone computer or terminal who has a specific decision to make with a specific goal in mind. Organisational decision support systems aim to support decision makers at all levels of an organisation (from executive, middle management managers to operators), who have a variety of decisions ...

Emergence as a Paradigm to Engineer Distributed Autonomic Software

Today’s software systems are becoming more and more complex, i.e. distributed, situated, open, and dynamic. In addition, there is a trend towards software that deals with its complexity autonomously the term autonomic computing has been coined to reflect this system behaviour. Making distributed systems autonomic means constructing these systems as a group of interacting autonomous entities tha...

Towards the Proper Integration of Extra-Functional Requirements

In spite of the many achievements in software engineering, proper treatment of extra-functional requirements (also known as non-functional requirements) within the software development process is still a challenge to our discipline. The application of functionality-biased software development methodologies can lead to major contradictions in the joint modelling of functional and extra-functiona...

Formal driven prototyping approach for multiagent systems

Even if Multi-Agent Systems are recognised as an appealing paradigm for designing many computer systems ranging from complex distributed systems to intelligent software applications they are still difficult to engineer. Many methodologies exist for engineering MAS. A common point of many of them is to produce different work products or models during the different phases. Each work product or mo...
